About Las Vegas with kids

There are more things to do in Las Vegas with kids than the city's grown-up image suggests, and many of them sit inside the resorts. Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay walks visitors through tunnels surrounded by sharks, rays and sea turtles, with a shallow touch pool for smaller children. At Circus Circus, the Adventuredome is an indoor theme park under a pink glass dome, with roller coasters, smaller rides, arcade games and climate control that matters in July. New York-New York has the Big Apple Coaster looping around its fake skyline, and the High Roller and the STRAT tower give older children views they will remember.

Away from the Strip, Springs Preserve is a 180-acre nature and history park on the site of the springs that first drew people to the Las Vegas Valley. It has desert botanical gardens, walking trails, live animals, a butterfly habitat and museum galleries on the region's water and wildlife. Downtown, the Discovery Children's Museum in Symphony Park has three floors of hands-on exhibits built for toddlers through preteens, including a 70-foot climbing tower.

Nevada law keeps anyone under 21 from lingering in casino gaming areas, so families can walk through a casino on the way to a restaurant or show but should not stop at the tables or machines. Many resorts have big pool complexes in summer, such as the wave pool and sand beach at Mandalay Bay, and several family-friendly shows play early in the evening. Outdoors, the Bellagio fountains, the Flamingo's birds and the Fremont Street light canopy are free and hold children's attention.

For a day out of town, the scenic drive at Red Rock Canyon and the short trails at Valley of Fire suit families, as long as you go early and carry plenty of water. Hoover Dam's visitor center and tours interest many older children, and Lake Mead has beaches and boat rentals. Our day-trips page covers all of them.
